Prague
Prague, a capital to explore on foot, facade by facade 🕍🌉
For centuries, Prague was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, an influential state within the Holy Roman Empire. This history has left visible traces throughout the city: palaces, churches, Gothic towers, Baroque buildings, Art Nouveau buildings, right up to the brutalist architecture of the Communist era. Nothing has been erased. Everything coexists, sometimes just a few meters apart.
The historic center is easily discovered on foot. Start in Staré Město, the old town, and stroll up to theastronomical clock. From here, cross the pedestrian-only Charles Bridge to Malá Strana, a Baroque quarter with its narrow streets and palaces of yesteryear. The climb continues up to Prague Castle, a vast complex overlooking the Vltava River: St. Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Palace, Golden Lane, gardens - it's all here. And if you want to go a little further, there's theChurch of St. Nicholas, the Strahov Monastery and the Municipal House, a masterpiece of Czech Art Nouveau. On the other side of the river, the Dancing House, designed by Frank Gehry, brings a contemporary touch to the whole.
🍽️ Prague cuisine is simple, local and often nourishing. We eat svičková, beef in cream sauce with knedlíky (steamed rolls), or vepřo knedlo zelo, roast pork with cabbage. For dessert, koláče topped with poppy seed or cottage cheese are a classic.
In the center of town, it's impossible to miss the trdelník: a rolled pastry baked over coals, often served hot with sugar, ice cream or chocolate. To take away, to nibble, to share.
And then there are the Vietnamese restaurants, very much in evidence in Prague. The city is home to one of the largest Vietnamese communities in Central Europe. Having settled here in the 70s, it has become part of everyday life. In neighborhoods such as Žižkov and Karlín, there are many family-run restaurants, often excellent, where you can enjoy pho, bún bò or spring rolls at reasonable prices.
🌿 To take a breather, the Letná parks or Petřín gardens offer beautiful views over the city. You can also walk or cycle along the Vltava, especially at sunset, when the bridges and rooftops of the Old Town turn golden.
🚆 Prague can be reached by night train from Zurich. Come and explore this beautiful city and enjoy a trdelník!
