A night at the Celica Hostel in Ljubljana: A unique experience

During our trip to Ljubljana, we had the opportunity to try out a very different and original type of accommodation: the Celica Hostel. Intrigued by the concept of this hostel, we met up with Tajda to find out more about its fascinating history. Here's our on-the-spot experience! 🌿
A district steeped in history
Celica Hostel is located in the alternative district of Metelkova, the former site of Austro-Hungarian military barracks. Following Slovenia's independence, Metelkova was transformed into a vibrant cultural space, a symbol of creativity and self-management. Once a military prison, Celica Hostel retains some of the characteristics of that era, while offering modern, artistic rooms.
Sleeping in a former prison may seem strange at first, but the special atmosphere of the place makes it a unique experience.

Eco-responsible accommodation
Celica Hostel is certified by the Green Key and Slovenia Green labels, making it a highly committed model of eco-responsible accommodation. These certifications reflect their commitment to ecological and social practices. Their environmental communication is omnipresent thanks to their THINK, ACT, SHARE strategy: waste sorting garbage cans, signs to raise awareness of water and energy saving, and a waste-free breakfast with homemade and local ingredients testify to their dedication.
Celica's sustainable strategy is visible throughout the inn. Small posters encourage guests to adopt sustainable practices and share their ideas.

L'Auberge, a greener model
In addition to Celica's green initiatives and labels, I discovered that hostels like this one have a carbon footprint 75% smaller than hotels. This is due to more efficient management of communal spaces and optimized use of resources, such as shared bathrooms and relaxation areas, which promote more sustainable consumption.

Diversified offering
Celica Hostel offers a wide range of rooms and dormitories, suitable for all types of travelers. There are 20 double or triple cells with shared bathrooms, each with its own unique layout.
You'll also find 6 quadruple rooms and one 5-bed room with private bathroom, as well as 6- and 10-bed dormitories, perfect for travelers wishing to share their experience with others.
Cultural events and sustainable fashion
Celica Hostel regularly organizes cultural events such as weekly concerts and monthly art exhibitions, in collaboration with local associations. They also promote sustainable fashion with "swap corners" for exchanging clothes and objects, as well as second-hand markets.
