Ljubljana by train, between rails and wonders

A capital that inspires me and makes me want to live there. 📍

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a city that seems to have stepped straight out of a fairy tale. The city bewitches you from the moment you set foot on its cobbled streets and picturesque alleyways. Living in Ljubljana means discovering a gentle quality of life, with an entirely pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city center.

The city then awakens in a burst of color and life, where locals and visitors mingle in perfect harmony.✨

A lively, friendly town

When the weather's nice, Ljubljana is transformed into a veritable scene of outdoor life. Lanes fill with laughter and conversation, cafés overflow with customers, and bicycles become everyone's preferred means of transport. Ice cream parlors attract gourmands, and the Ljubljanica River becomes a place of relaxation for walkers and runners. It's a spectacle that includes all ages and even all species! From children to the elderly, cats to birds, and even nutrias, those impressive rodents originally imported from North America for their fur, now become the river's mascots.

Lively markets

Ljubljana is famous for its many markets. The antique market, local craftsmen's markets and the Open Kitchen culinary market are all must-sees. Strolling through these markets, sampling the local delicacies, and letting yourself be carried away by the warm atmosphere is one of the best ways to discover the city.

Walks and discoveries

Strolling along the Ljubljanica River, climbing the hill to the castle, taking a siesta in Tivoli Park or exploring the botanical garden are just some of the simple pleasures Ljubljana has to offer. In 2016, the city won the Green Capital of Europe award, largely thanks to its many green spaces and commitment to sustainability.

A rich and diverse heritage

On a guided bike tour with Peter, a passionate local, we immersed ourselves in Ljubljana's fascinating history. From its Slavic and Roman origins to the diverse influences of its history, including its crucial role during the Yugoslav period against Nazi Germany. The story of Ljubljana's dragons, inspired by a Greek fable, adds a mystical touch to this already magical city.

Krakovo and the protection symbols

Krakovo, one of Ljubljana's oldest districts, bears witness to past hardships, notably the Black Death. If you look closely, you can still see symbols hanging on the houses, vestiges of protection against disease, a superstitious tradition that recalls the city's historical struggles. This small district was once an important agricultural center for Ljubljana. Krakovo's market gardeners supplied fresh produce to the city's markets.

Tivoli and green spaces

Tivoli Park, which extends into a nature reserve and forest, is a haven of peace and greenery. The museum at the entrance to the park and its café offer a pleasant cultural break. The city's many museums are also well worth a visit, offering a rich and varied insight into Slovenian history and culture.

Metelkova: The alternative district

Metelkova, a self-managed, alternative and artistic district, is a unique place in Ljubljana. Located on the site of former Austro-Hungarian military barracks, today this district has become a symbol of creativity, hosting art workshops, concerts, galleries, bars and debating spaces.

Ljubljana's former military prison has been transformed into a hostel called Hostel Celica, a strong emblem of the district. Hostel Celica retains some of the features of the former prison, offering original rooms with a modern, artistic touch.

🌱 Celica Hostel stands out for its many eco-friendly initiatives. What's more, with a rich program of concerts and events highlighting young local talent, the hostel is also a must for travelers keen to discover the alternative side of Ljubljana.

Beyond the capital

Slovenia also boasts natural treasures such as lakes Bled and Bohinj, vineyards, caves and a coastline influenced by Italy and the Balkans. Exploring these landscapes by bike, even in the rain, offers unforgettable experiences.
