Dijon
Dijon, city of history and flavors🟡🍷
The historic capital of the Dukes of Burgundy, Dijon was long one of the great political and cultural centers of medieval Europe. The heart of the city has preserved this richness: 15th-century mansions, half-timbered houses, glazed roofs, Gothic churches... Here, history is visible on every street corner, but always at walking height.
The tour often begins around the Palace of the Dukes , which now houses the town hall and the Museum of Fine Arts . Admission is free, and the collections range from Flemish paintings to the monumental tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy. Right next door, Place de la Libération is one of the most pleasant places to sit on a terrace and watch the city go by.
Dijon is explored slowly. The owl trail , marked by arrows on the ground, allows you to discover the main sights of the center on foot: the Millière house , the Saint-Michel and Notre-Dame churches, the Philippe le Bon tower, and many small, discreet passages, between courtyards, gardens and squares.
🌿 Just a few minutes from the center, the Darcy Garden , the Colombière Park , or the banks of the canal offer quiet places to read, walk, or picnic. And if you want to get some height, the Butte de Talant offers a view of Dijon as a whole, between the city and the vineyards.
🍽️ When it comes to food, Burgundy is very generous. Mustard of course (the real, strong, local kind), but also eggs in meurette , parsley ham , goat cheese , gingerbread ... and wine, lots of wine. There are many wine cellars and wine bars, as well as small bistros where you can taste regional cuisine without fuss. The Halles market , built by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, is an excellent starting point: fresh produce, local artisans, and sometimes even meals to enjoy on site.
🚆 Dijon can be reached by direct train in less than 3 hours from Lausanne and Zurich, and less than 2 hours from Basel. A perfect city for a relaxing getaway, combining culture, vineyards, and gourmet delights.
