Marseille is the oldest city in France , founded in 600 BC by Greek sailors from Phocaea. It has never been a capital, but always a port, a crossroads, a place of passage. This open, Mediterranean past is found everywhere: in its accent, in its salt-worn facades, in its cuisine, in the energy of its neighborhoods.
The historic center doesn't reveal itself immediately. You have to walk, take your time, stop on the stairs, and wander. Le Panier , with its narrow streets and colorful shutters, has the feel of a village. There you'll find workshops, painted walls, and quiet little squares, often far from the hustle and bustle of the Old Port. Higher up, the Cours Julien district mixes galleries, bookstores, vegetarian restaurants, and shared gardens.
🌿 And then there are the calanques , right there, within reach of a bus, bike or walk. There are magnificent hiking trails between Les Goudes , Callelongue , or even Morgiou . No need for a boat: the coves are accessible, if you agree to climb a little. Along the way, you cross the scrubland, walk along cliffs, have a picnic facing the sea, swim in clear water between the rocks. Off-season, it's even better.
To explore a little further without a car, there is also the Côte Bleue train , a spectacular line that runs along the sea from Marseille towards the west. The carriages cross viaducts, tunnels, coves and small local stations. You can stop at Niolon , Carry-le-Rouet , La Redonne , or Ensuès , go down a path, find a cove, and dive into the turquoise water. It is another face of Marseille, wilder, within reach of TER.
🍽️ When it comes to food, Marseille is a mix. You can find everything there: grilled fish , Armenian, Maghrebi , Comoriancuisine , pieds paquet , bourride , or just a crispy panisse on the go. The Capucins market is a good starting point. To have a coffee or eat something simple and good, it's better to move a little away from the port and settle in a courtyard, a sloping street, or on the edge of a more discreet port like Malmousque or l'Estaque .
🚆 Marseille is accessible by train from Geneva with a connection in Lyon. In a 4-hour train ride, enjoy the blue sea, the coves, and the flavors of the Mediterranean.
